Every market starts with a tax. The job is finding enough pricing error to clear it.

Most bettors lose because the math is stacked before kickoff.
Standard sportsbook lines bake in vig. A −110 coin flip needs 52.38% just to break even. The only serious paths are better probability estimates, better prices, disciplined staking, and tracking whether your numbers beat the close. PlaceBets is built around those habits: model output, odds context, confidence, and an explanation you can inspect before you trust it.
Sports betting questions
The questions people actually ask before their first bet.
What is sports betting?
Sports betting is risking money on the outcome of a sporting event at a licensed operator. In the US it is regulated by the states, not by a single federal agency. Most states require you to be 21+ and physically located inside the state where the sportsbook is licensed. PlaceBets.ai does not accept bets; it compares the prices that licensed books post.
How do I place a bet online?
Check that online betting is legal in your state, choose a licensed sportsbook, complete its identity and age checks, deposit, open the game you want, choose a market such as the moneyline or spread, enter your stake, and review the slip before you submit. Our step-by-step guide covers each screen and the mistakes to avoid before your first bet.
What is the vig in sports betting?
The vig, or juice, is the sportsbook's margin built into the odds. A market priced -110 on both sides implies about 52.4% for each side, which adds up to 104.8%. The extra 4.8% is the hold. To profit long term you need prices better than the fair, no-vig number often enough to overcome that margin.
Is sports betting legal where I live?
It depends on your state. Sports betting is legal in a majority of states, but online betting is narrower and each state sets its own age, licensing and location rules. Our legal states tracker lists the jurisdictions we cover; the state regulator's website is the final authority. Being 21+ and physically in a legal state are usually both required.
How much of my bankroll should I bet?
A common starting point is 1% to 2% of a dedicated bankroll per bet, adjusted for the edge and the variance of the market. That is a risk-control rule, not a guarantee of profit. Never stake money you need for rent, food or debt, and set a loss limit before you start.
Can PlaceBets.ai place a bet for me?
No. PlaceBets.ai is an independent research site. We do not operate a sportsbook, accept deposits, hold funds or sell picks. We show the prices, explain the math and link to licensed operators; the bet itself is between you and the sportsbook.
New to this? Start with how to place a bet, then compare licensed sportsbooks and check your state. If you want the wider picture, read the gambling guide. Betting is 21+ and legal only where authorized.
